A recent ruling by a federal court in Virginia has people talking again about a subject that hasn’t gotten much attention since AOL mailed out its last free-trial cd: the potential liability of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for their subscribers’ online copyright infringement. For nearly two decades, ISPs have been enjoying largely worry-free “safe harbor” protection from such liability under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Some are now wondering if ISPs need to start worrying.
